The Recent WWE/Mattel Reveals, My Thoughts

Hi all, it's a bit after the fact but I felt I needed to write about the recent WWE/Mattel reveals. We had seen leaked lists and even the packaging of one of the figures, front and back, so we knew what to expect for the Legends line at least.

The Legends line, well the original Legends line, is my favourite line from Mattel, some of them are really outstanding. Since the re-launch with series 7 some have been very good and some have failed to impress. So, these latest (series 12) ones saw Billy Gunn based on the DX invasion of WCW, Kevin Nash in nWo WCW gear, Junkyard Dog, which will also be the chase and the final one will be 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper.

The Gunn one is fine, it'll be the third Elite style Gunn released by Mattel, it's the first in a series of DX affiliated wrestlers that took part in the 'invasion' of WCW at the Norfolk Scope back in the hey days of the Monday Night Wars. If I was to be picky at all, I'd have preferred if the combat style trousers he is wearing were not all the way to the bottom of his legs. At the time, Gunn has his trousers tucked into his boots so maybe a shorter pair like the ones that came with Tomasso Ciampa would have been more suited. I am not 100% sure that would have looked right, no doubt some of us that the Ciampa figure and get this Gunn will try it. Failing that, maybe you can just pull the legs up above the boots, but in saying that, as you can see by the picture, under the DX shirt and combat trousers he is in wrestling gear whereas at the invasion he had army boots on so maybe this whole paragraph is redundant.

I am a big fan of Elite style Kevin Nash/Diesel figures, so this really is a must for me. It looks a great figure with the bandana tied at the front BUT for me personally, as I think I mentioned in the previous blog when the leaks first came out, I wanted a nWo Nash from his WWE run in about 2002/03 to go along with the Scott Hall that was released some time back and the more recent X-Pac that came out in the most recent Fan Takeover series. Hopefully one day we'll get that figure.

JYD had only ever had one Elite style figure in the past, this was released in an early core elite line, good figure in white trunks complete with chain. These new ones are basically repaints, both figures seem the same just with different coloured tights, one has red tights and one has blue. I'll gladly get both if the opportunity arrives but as long as I get one I'll be happy. I have not been able to get any of the chase figures from the previous lines (Valentine, Roberts or Dibease and Beefcake hasn't surfaced in regular or chase yet I am led to believe).

The final one is Piper and I'm not sold at all on the headscan for this one, it's not the worst, that honour probably goes to the original Legends one but it is far from the best, I think the one that came with Mr T in the Wrestle Mania II set is the best. I am hoping to still pick up his Hall of Fame figure one day, you know where I am if you have one to sell.

So, that's Legends series 12, what are your thoughts on it from what you have seen?

Really looking forward to Brutus Beefcake from Series 10, DDP not so much. Series 11 looks outstanding, Scott Hall, Bam Bam Bigelow, Big John Studd & Randy Savage (which will be the chase) you'll be able to pick these up from our friends at Wrestling Trader

Other reveals from SDCC 2021 were:
