My Top 5 Bret 'Hitman' Hart Figures
Earlier on today I watched a video on YouTube by Kyle Peterson, check his channel out and subscribe, always great content, and the latest video was on his top 5 Bret 'Hitman' Hart figures, I won't go into his choices as hopefully you'll check his video out but what I'll do here is list my own.
Bret has always been a favourite of mine, big fan of his no nonsense style of wrestling and over the years, he has had some excellent action figures. When I got into wrestling Hasbro had been releasing WWF action figures for a few months and I did have at least one Bret figure from them along with many other of their WWF figures. From there, JAKKS got the licence to make WWF figures. They did a series called 'Bone Crunchers' but I didn't have many of these and the ones I did have didn't involve Bret.
JAKKS would go on to release what they called the 'Classic Superstars' range which, as it sounds, was a great line covering wrestlers, managers and announcers from a wide timespan of wrestling history. Bret had many figures in the CS line, some were very good and if I were to do a list of just JAKKS Bret Hart figures it would be a good list.
There were also some figures of Bret Hart released when he was in WCW but they weren't very good at all, I think I had one of them.
When Mattel got the WWE licence to make figures the game really changed, there have been some excellent figures of Bret from Mattel and my top 5 Bret Hart figures will be just from the Mattel line.
There has always been an issue with the head scans of Bret's figures despite how good they are overall but let's look past that.
So, as of writing this, I have all the Elite style and one Ultimate Edition figures of Bret released, there are some decent basic figures but I don't have any of those, only have a few basic figures overall really.
At number 5 I have the only one released in what you would call the core elite line and it's from Elite series 43, it has a look of about 1990 and it came with a pair of sunglasses, not the trademark ones Bret would go on to wear throughout the majority of his WWF career but what you would maybe call a normal pair. Also, this figure came with a WWF tag team title belt and when Elite 43 came out, I hadn't been collecting Mattel figures for too long and this was one of the first Mattel figures belts I got in my collection. Really like that belt and wish I had more in the collection.
At number 4 I have the Wrestle Mania 30 one, of course it's not based on a match Bret had at WM 30 but Mattel in there wisdom would release figures around the time of Wrestle Mania's and put in figures of wrestlers from past WM's, this one was based on his WM X title victory over Yokozuna, earlier on in the night, Bret had lost a match to his brother Owen in what is regarded as one of the greatest WM matches ever. Due to the match this figure was based on, it came with the Winged Eagle World title belt.

At number 3 I have figure that was a Ringside Collectibles Exclusive and is based on Bret's crowning moment at the 1993 King of The Ring tournament. This was the first PPV version of the tournament and Bret had a stellar showing that night. With it being the WWF, they couldn't let Bret just have his moment in the sun and in what was the debut of Jerry 'The King' Lawler saw Bret get brutally attacked by Lawler who of course claimed he is the only king of professional wrestling. It wasn't a feud I was really looking forward to at the time, but it did have its moments, Lawler was always constantly running Bret down and his parents in a way only Lawler can. They were supposed to have a match at Summer Slam 93 but Lawler came out on crutches saying he was unfit to wrestle but had a replacement to face Bret and that was Doink The Clown and with this being the original Doink, Matt Borne, this match was very good. it was all ploy on Lawler's part, and he attacked Bret at the end of the match. Back to the figure itself, it captures a moment in Bret's career that was unique, the first PPV KOTR winner.
At number 2 a figure that I imagine will be many peoples number 1 figure and that is another Ringside Collectables Exclusive and it the mainly pink figure based on his look from Royal Rumble 1993 where he defended his WWF title against Razor Ramon (doesn't come with the title belt though). A great looking figure, I won't lie, I am not a fan of the rubber jacket, but it has been pointed out many times that it may not have worked if it was made from another material. It is a very sought-after figure and if you can find one on the open market it will cost you a pretty penny even loose, let alone MOC. As I previously stated, it will be many peoples number 1 Bret Hart figure and I wouldn't argue with anyone on that.
And so, here we are, my number 1 Mattel Bret 'Hitman' Hart figure is the Defining Moments one based on his look at the Canadian Stampede show from 1997. This figure comes with a soft goods leather jacket, world title belt and Canadian flag. This was a great year in wrestling, especially in the WWF for me, ended on a sour note with the Montreal debacle but if you read my previous blog, you'll know my views on that. Yes, a terrific figure and a must for any collector in my opinion.
So that's my list of top 5 Bret Hart figures all from the Mattel line, some that didn't make the list were the Toys R Us exclusive figure based on Bret's look when he returned to the promotion in, I want to say 2006 and two figures that wouldn't be close to my top 5 really, the Ultimate Edition figure, the head scans are just awful and the figure that came in the two pack with Goldberg, despite having great looking ring gear, the figure shape and scan are TERRIBLE.
I look forward to your thoughts, please give me your top 5 Bret Hart figures be that from LJN, Hasbro, JAKKS or Mattel oh, of course, if you want to add his WCW ones, feel free.
