The WWE Retrofest Line
Hi all, hope you enjoyed the Defining Moments write up, today I am going to be looking at the Retrofest line released by WWE/Mattel.
I believe the term RetroFest as far as the WWE/F was used was in an arcade game and thses plays into why the boxes for the figures were in the style of an arcade game. Loads of collectors really liked these, I wasn't overley bothered as a loose collector I was more focused on that, one of the figures in the line was one I wanted them to release for years and another one of them, I didn't think about being released but when they did I knew I must have it, I ended getting them all, there wasn't too many in the series, so with that, let's go.
First in the line was Macho Man Randy Savage and Savage was doing commentary mostly I believe in 1993, when this attire is from but I vividly recall him wearing this attire in a match against Doink The Clown on RAW in the summer of 93 which came from an altrication when Savage was on commentary. It's a great looking figure, one can never have too many Savage Elite figures.
Next in the line was Shawn Michaels in his Rockers gear, we had Michaels as a Rocker previously in the Matty Collector series of Legends, this look (along with Marty) was based on about a 1989 look but this RetroFest one was I'd say a 1990/91 look. It was, for me, a strange one to release but this version of Michaels was included in a poll for the next Defining Moments figure so it made sense that Mattel found a way to get this figure out.
It's a shame to an extent there will not be a Marty in this or any ring attire going forward, I say that, it MAY change but as it stands, I don't think he is on good terms with the company but some people were obtaining two of the Michaels figures and swapping the heads on one with a Marty one, crazy that as the Legends one is not too easy/cheap to get hold of and I'd much prefer to have the Legends set rather than both guys in the ring attire this RetroFest is. Let me know if you have created a Marty to match the Shawn.
These were followed by the Honky Tonk Man, this was one at first I didn't think I must have it, he had a figure released in one of the early Elite lines and as mentioned on other entries, I wasn't collecting Mattel figures from the start but did get my hands on the older one where his jumpsuit is red. I do like that figure I must say. I picked up this one as it was going quite sheap in The Entertainer here in the UK. Nothing to write home about but if you don't have the previous Elite HTM figure in your collecttion it's worth picking up.
Now, next in the line was Hacksaw Jim Duggan or should that be King Duggan? I was always confused by this one as the figure comes with the crown and yes, in 1988 Duggan won a tournament and was crowned King Duggan, however, this figure which also comes with his 2x4, American flag and a T-Shirt has him in a singlet and, I could be wrong, but I only thought Duggan wore the singlet in about 1993, again, if I am wrong, please let me know. I am not 100% if by the time this came out I had the Legends Duggan so I picked it up despite my queries of the ring attire etc. It does have a different headscan, a more goofy one, compared to the Legends one so all good.
And the next release was the one I was talking about at the beginning, only a few months before I mentioned online if we would ever get a Ric Flair figure to match the Randy Savage one that came out in the Elite line from their Wrestle Mania VII match and then down the line, this Flair was announced, I was very happy I must say. Love all the Flair Elites and will contine to buy them as long as they churn them out. The aforementioned Savage didn't really come with accessories, like glasses/hat but this Flair came with a tremendous red/silver robe. Without doubt, my favourite of the line.
Next up, linking back to Flair, bear with me, was Mr Perfect, there had been two Mr Perfect Elites previous to this, the Legends one in blue/black which is wonderful and the one that came in the Heenan family pack which was in orange, just a repaint of sorts, same headscan but this RetroFest had a brand new headscan and where the link with Flair comes in is it was based on the ring attire Perfect wore at the 1992 Survivor Series teaming with Savage to face Flair & Razor Ramon. This was the figure I was speaking about earlier when I wrote I never thought of it being released but when I found out it was, I knew I had to have it. Great figure.
I think not long after the release of the Mr. Perfect figure Mattel said the line would be coming to an end but there would be one more release and it was the Iron Sheik, we had already had TWO Iron Sheik figures, both in the Legends line, one a singles one in a double pack with Nikolai Volkoff. This one did have an upgraded headscan, attire and robe but for the final figure it would've been great to get a figure we hadn't had in the line, I mean every figure in this line had at least one figure previously, some more than that.
It was a decent line but like I just said, shame we didn't get any first in the Mattel line figures.
Let me know what figures you have from this line, if you don't have them all, what you want and do you have these MOC or loose?
