Good brother Geordie posted on the Wrestling Figures UK page (a great page along with Wrestling Toys Gaming United) for figure collectors to network, you can find them on facebook, that with 10 series of the Monday Night Wars figures now out and have been available in Smyths, in store or online so far, well, none of us (unless you have it sent from the US) have the Eric Bischoff from the latest series as it's delayed until towards the end of this month. Anyway, the questions Geordie asked on his post, what is your favourite figure so far, what is your worst figure and who's winning the war based on the figures released, WWE or WCW? I didn't give my answers in the comments but did say I would do a blog on the subject so here we are.
First, I will list my favourite from each series, I have all 8 series complete (except Bischoff as mentioned) with the chases but from the Greatest Hits figures, I didn't buy any of the first series because I have all the figures in that set from the first time around, there wasn't enough changes for me to spend even more money than I do already, I do however have the BAF Vincent that came with that set which I bought on the secondary market, it just didn't have the Too Sweet hands. From the second series, I bought the Bret Hart as I collect all of his Elites/Ultimates and if I am honest, it is an upgrade on the figure it's based on, the one that came with Goldberg in the two-pack some years ago. Also in that set was a Diamond Dallas Page (was a chase too) and I picked both of them up too as we hadn't had any like that really, different to his Legends and Elite figures years ago and different enough to the ones that came out in the MNW series where he was wearing jeans. The ones in the Greatest Hits series looked very much like the failed UE one that would've come with the Nitro stage crowdfunder, so I was picking those up.
Right, let's go, my favourite figure from series 1 is the Scott Hall based on when he came out the crowd on Nitro after leaving the WWF in 1996. The figure is not perfect but it's pretty near.
From series 2, I'd like to say the Kevin Nash but the facial expression let's it down for me so I will go for the Fake Diesel, good deep cut that one. I bought two of these, and an extra Diesel figure and did a head swap so I now have a fake Diesel head on a body with a grey singlet, you can see the image of that one here in the blog.
Series 3 was the first one to have chases and this series had two. We had Harlem Heat in black ring gear and they had chase versions in blue too. The carry on trying to get all 4 was crazy at the time, I recall getting the regular ones in the post from Smyths then going into store to look for the chases but only found Stevie Ray I think so the hunt was on, I kept on posting on social media and eventually, someone came through for me with the Booker T. My favourite figure from the series has to be the BAF Disciple, a real deep cut and a really good figure. Expensive series for me this, bought all 4 of the Harlem Heat and 2 of The Rock's, one with and without the t shirt, each with a different head on and the shirtless one has an added IC title.
Series 4 had a chase DDP, with jeans but two different shades so had to get them and there was also a Curt Hennig with two different heads. One was for him to be when he was part of the West Texas Rednecks and one for when he was in the nWo as this figure also came with an nWo shirt so I had to buy two of these too. LOVE the nWo one with an added WCW US title and that one is my favourite in the series.
Series 5 now this was a very good set, only one I don't have from this one in my collection is Lita as I don't collect female figures, even in the legends line, I have all the figures from the very start back in 2012 except the female ones that came out a couple of years ago, Molly Holly and Stacey Kiebler I believe. As I said, the figures in this one are very good, yes, theres another Razor Ramon but the colours pop and still to this day on an Elite/Ultimate, it's the only one that has a soft goods vest. The chase was Syxx, they looked pretty much the same but one had Thug on the front of his singlet, first time head sculpt on these too. I think my favourite figure of this series is probably the WCW debut Warrior, another figure, in UE form, was supposed to come with the Nitro stage.
Series 6 wasn’t a great set if I’m honest, featuring a short haired British Bulldog, Kane, Hardcore Hak, Booker T (also the chase) and the BAF was Golga. Wasn’t a good set at all, I’ll say the two Booker T’s are the best with the one in white being the very best.
Series 7 was a better set than the previous. We had another Hollywood Hogan which I’m a fan of, a repaint of a Jerry Lawler, nWo Great Muta and chase and many people’s favourite in this series, Prince Albert, the BAF was ‘Trillionaire’ Ted. Big fan of the Hogan but I think nWo Muta is my number 1 in this set.
Series 8, well, I have the set, apart from the Eric Bischoff as I write this. We have a Shark and chase, American Bad Ass Undertaker, Brian Pillman and the BAF is an announcer Michael Cole. Without having Bischoff in hand, I think Pillman just takes my number 1 spot. It’s not perfect and it’ll be great to get the ZST version of him at some point between now and the end of the year, fingers crossed.
So to answer Geordie’s questions:
My favourite figure of all we’ve had so far is the Scott Hall from series 1.
The worst one, well, without counting BAF’s, boy, this is tough, there has been some bad ones, let’s say RVD from series 3.
And I would say WCW are winning the war.
We have some decent ones coming up, I’m looking forward to the BAF in series 10 which will be X Pac based on his WWF return after Wrestle Mania XIV.
