Mattel WWE Hall of Fame Figures
Hello all, another week, another blog. First off, thanks to those who have been in touch telling me how you are liking the blogs, it's really appreciated but please, keep the feedback coming, I need to know what you think I need to improve on etc. Also, if there is anything figure related you want me to write about, let me know.
So, we are in Wrestle Mania season and we all know, the night before WM is the Hall of Fame, so today I will take a look at the Hall of Fame figures released by Mattel.
By the time I had started collecting Mattel figures the HOF figures were well established so I was playing catch up, had to see what was out and what I could get my hands on for a reasonable price. I have to be honest, I can't recall in what order I got the HOF figures I have so let's just have a run through them in the order they came out.
Series 1 was a set of 4 figures, I have 3 or 2 out of the 4 depending on how you look at it, I'll explain. So, in the series we had a 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin, Sgt Slaughter, Trish Stratus & Ultimate Warrior. The Austin is a good one, as it's not him in his wrestling attire in this one he has jean shorts (have I heard them called jorts?) anyway, you can see it pictured, comes with vest, gold chain, double knee braces and a rubber WHAT? t shirt, my one is missing this rubber monstrosity, not too bothered, would pick it up if I saw it just so the figure is complete though.
The Slaughter was a more traditional Slaughter figure, I still hear/read people knocking his Legends series 1 figure based on the attire he is in but if you read my write up on the Legends figures, you'll know I was perfectly fine with it.
As I don't collect figures of the females in wrestling, I do not own the Stratus one, but it is fine for what it is.
Now, I said I had 3 or 2 of the series depending on how you look at it. My one, although the same figure, at least I think it is, mine is not actually from the HOF line but from an Argos (UK store) exclusive pack that came with the Warrior, Rick Rude and a basic ring and cage based on their match at Summer Slam 90. Now, I discovered some time back that the Rude which looked very much like the Legends one, without the robe, it actually was different, the colour tone of the flames on the tights is different but as far as I know, the Warriors are the same, looking for clarification from anyone that has both so, let me know if you do, thanks.
Decent first wave of the Hall of Fame figures so, the second lot had Eddie Guererro, Hulk Hogan, Tito Santana & Yokozuna. I have 3 from this series. First up is Guerrero, it is one of many great EG figures, this one comes with a Latino Heat rubber t shirt but I, like with the Austin one, don't have or the roses the figure came with, roses you may ask, well the figure is based around the time Eddie was trying to woo Chyna back in the day.
Next up was Hulk Hogan, big fan of this figure I must say, if pushed, I'd say it was based on his look from the end of Wrestle Mania IX when he came down to the ring to confront Yokozuna after he had just defeated Bret Hart for the WWF title.
We also had Tito Santana in the line, a classic for Santana, I think this may have been the first HOF figure I was able to obtain. From what I hear, when it was released, it was a bit of a peg warmer, not only in the US but here in the UK too.
The 4th and final figure was Yokozuna, I don't have this one, the other 2 Yoko's released in Elite form have him in red tights, this HOF however has him in white tights and a different head scan that included a beard. It also comes with 2 WWF tag team title belts, I'm just surmising that he has the 2 belts as the figure is based on when he was in a team with Owen Hart and they were tag champions at some point and as no deal has been struck with Owen's family and the WWE and maybe never will, we are not going to get an Owen figure.
The third series had just the 3 figures but 3 good ones. There was Jimmy 'Mouth of The South' Hart, Macho King Randy Savage and Million Dollar Man Ted Dibease. I recently purchased the Hart after passing on it many times in the past. Very nice figure.
The Macho King again, was another great figure. I am not sure which match this was based on, let me know if you do. The figure doesn't have a ring jacket but does have a crown, sceptre and removeable glasses.
And the final one, Ted DiBease in wrestling gear, he has recently had 2 figures released in the Legends line but in the suit, he wore to the ring, there were 2 as one is a chase figure. The figure came with a gold-coloured briefcase, his Million Dollar belt and a basketball, a strange choice you may think well, part of his gimmick was getting people out the crowd to do things for cash, this would sometimes include doing challenges with a basketball. You may or may not know that one of these challenges once were for someone to come into the ring and kiss his bare foot for a 100-dollar bill and the person who took him up on this offer, a young Rob Van Dam, there is a link to the video HERE
Series 4 was back to 4 figures, and they were, Booker T, Jerry 'The King' Lawler, Edge & Sting. I only have one from this line and that is Booker T who is decked out in his King Booker outfit. Looks great and probably the best in the series.
Edge was up next, nothing too amazing about the figure if I am being honest, I am not an Edge fan, not that it matters when it comes to figures, I mean, if I only bought figures of wrestlers, I was a fan of I would only have a handful. I do have a selection of Edge figures, 4 I think, a lot considering I'm not a fan....oh, here we go again.
The Lawler figure is another good figure from the pictures I have seen, I would like to have this one in the collection so hit me up if you're selling one or knows someone who is. I do have a Lawler elite, well, with the recent one released in the Elite line I have 2, the latter one being based around 1993 and is a VERY good figure, I also have the original release and it was before the technology and the head scan isn't the greatest. The HOF one however is very good, I'd say the look is based his 80's look. Like with the last figure in the series, hit me up if you're selling.
The final figure in this wave was Sting, decked out in a long red coat, yes, it's one of the rubber ones but it's very striking, talking of which, the figure also comes with a baseball bat. So, like wit Lawler, if you have this HOF Sting and are willing to sell, get in touch.
The next series was the last, featured I think my favourite figure in the Hall of Fame series, and you will see it pictured here, it is Diesel. There are a number of Kevin Nash/Diesel figures and just for the Diesel ones, this is by far the best. He has the shorter hair which tells you it's based on his look early on in his WWF career, he has the IC title, entrance vest and glasses, I'd say 1994 is when it's based on. Really good figure and one of the last I'd ever get rid of.
Next up was George 'The Animal' Steele, another re-release by Mattel as this figure came out in the Legends line but it was more complete as it had his trademark t shirt whereas this one doesn't, it does however come with his little cuddly friend, Mime. If you need a George 'The Animal' Steele for your collection I have one for sale, check out the links at the end to find it.
Then we had Jake 'The Snake' Roberts, there's a number of Roberts' out now one in the original Legends line, one in the All-Stars line and two in the more current Legends line but this HOF one I think could be based on a look (ring gear wise) he had when he was in WCW in 1992. It's a great figure as all Jakes are to be honest, glad to have it.
And the last one in this wave was 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper. I don't have this one, not the biggest fan of it but if it came up at a decent price, I'd probably buy it, it has a nice cloth shirt.
And that's it for the Hall of Fame series as far as single figures goes, there were some boxsets, so let's cover them.
There was a two-pack of The Ultimate Warrior & Papa Shango based on their interaction at Wrestle Mania VIII, the Warrior is outstanding and not saying Shango isn't, but it is a re-release from an early Elite line, I was glad this set came out as I was never able to get that early Elite one.
First up there was the Heenan family boxset it consists of Bobby Heenan, Big John Studd, Mr Perfect and Andre The Giant. I never got this as a whole set, I have Studd and Perfect in the collection, I used to have Andre but when I got my Legends one, I sold the HOF one, I would like the Heenen as it's based on his look from Wrestle Mania III when Andre faced Hogan.
Also, there was a Four Horsemen set, this featured Ric Flair, Barry Windham, Arn Anderson &Tully Blanchard. Good set, I have all of these, a while after I got these, I recall reading on figure pages on facebook they were popping up in B&M stores over here, don't think I personally ever saw them but then again, I didn't frequent B&M that much, it could be the place to check out currently though as they are competing with Smyths on the current Elite figures, people are picking up chase figures in there too.
And finally, there was the WCW based one called the 'Nitro Notables' it featured Eddie Guerrero in jeans and came with a rubber LWO shirt, Nash & Hall also in jeans and Nash had a painted on nWo black/red shirt and Hall an nWo black/white and the only figure I have from this series is Larry Zbyszko as I thought, there's never going to be another Zbyszko figure however, what I found weird was Larry came in his wrestling gear but his Nitro days were mainly known for him as a commentator, not complaining though at all, oh, they spelt his name wrong on the box too.
So that's it guys, as ever, thanks for reading, let me know what your favourite HOF figure is, what do you have and what do you want from the line and if you have any of the ones I need, hit me up.
